Wow -- thanks for sharing that essay. There's something in there about the benefits of grappling with one's whiteness in public and in dialogue that feels really valuable. I actually have a Guston painting on my desktop, and I'm really glad to learn more about him and his trajectory as an artist.
This was so informative. I hope the art instructor reads this and revises responses to students. (The response seemed curt and potentially traumatizing). Some things/images that are can be triggering need more context than what they signify for art movement terms.
